IPY Youth Steering Committee (YSC) Launches Website:

The YSC’s new website is up and running at www.ipyyouth.org.  This site is equipped with the ability for youth to discuss polar issues, to post podcasts, to design their own local projects, to recruit members, and to highlight their efforts through their own project pages.  The site also highlights upcoming events and contains a Google Maps image showing where members of the site are from.

IPY Educational Resources Available from USGS:

The U.S. Geological Survey has just launched a website for web-accessed educational resources for teachers to use during IPY: international.usgs.gov/ipy/ed_resources.shtml. To help improve the website, USGS would appreciate receiving feedback from users; please contact Suzanne Weedman at sweedman@usgs.gov

IPY Postage Stamps Available from U.S. Postal Service:

International Polar Year 2007-2008 is highlighted on a souvenir sheet of U.S. postal stamps.  This sheet features two international rate stamps: one is a marvelous photograph of the aurora borealis, and the second is an equally eye-catching photograph of the aurora australis.  The souvenir sheet will only be available online (www.usps.gov) or by calling +1 800-STAMP-24 within the United States.  Cost is $1.68 per sheet plus $1.00 shipping to U.S. addresses.

Scope of Science Document Outlines IPY Research:

The IPY Joint Committee has released The Scope of Science for the International Polar Year 2007–2008, available online at www.ipy.org/index.php?/ipy/detail/the_scope_of_science_for_the_international_polar_year.

IPY Publications Database Available Online:

This database contains bibliographic records for publications about or resulting from IPY 2007-2008 and the three previous IPYs.  It currently contains 60 records and is expected to grow to approximately 20,000 records in the next ten years.  Available online at: www.nisc.com/ipy.
For further information, please contact: Ross Goodwin (rgoodwin@ucalgary.ca).

IPY Bibliography Available from NOAA:

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announces the publication of “International Polar Year 2007-2008: Resources on Polar Research in the NOAA Central Library Network: A Selected Bibliography.”
The bibliography is available for download in PDF format (docs.lib.noaa.gov/rescue/Bibliographies/IPY2007.pdf) and Microsoft Word format (docs.lib.noaa.gov/rescue/Bibliographies/IPY2007.doc).

Collect Snow and Participate in IPY:

The IPY Global Snowflake Network is featured in a story by Ivanhoe Broadcast News (video and transcript available online at www.ivanhoe.com/science/story/2007/02/243a.html), explaining how you can collect snow as a part of an IPY research project.

“Posters on the Hill” Competition for Students:

Each spring, the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) hosts a “Posters on the Hill” event for students to present their research at a reception in the Rayburn Office Building of the U.S. House of Representatives.  For Spring 2008, CUR would like to incorporate a theme of polar research and will be especially looking for student research in this area.  In Fall 2007, CUR will begin soliciting applications for this competition with a due date of November 15, 2007.  Applicants are notified in February of their acceptance.
For more information, visit: http://www.cur.org.

New Organization Forms for Early Career Scientists:

A new organization, the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS), has been created to serve as a network for early career scientists and engineers with an interest in Polar Regions and the cryosphere in general.  The mission of APECS is to raise the profile of polar science by providing a continuum of leadership between early career and senior scientists that is both international and interdisciplinary.
Visit http://bioweb.biology.kent.edu/Polar/home.php for membership information, news, connections with other polar researchers, jobs, and events be of interest.
APECS is an endorsed International Polar Year project and has been acknowledged by IASC and SCAR as the leading organization for early career scientists activities in the polar realm.
